Trump orders federal review of AI model releases by May 31?
The Trump administration has taken several steps on artificial intelligence policy in 2025 and 2026, including two executive orders and a national framework, but as of late May it has not issued a specific order requiring federal review of AI model releases before they become public.
In January 2025, President Trump signed an executive order titled "Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence," which revoked the previous administration's AI executive order and directed a review of actions taken under it.
A second executive order in December 2025 aimed at "Ensuring a National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence" focused on preempting state AI laws. The administration released the resulting National AI Policy Framework in March 2026.
The framework outlines principles for AI development but does not mandate a federal review of individual model releases.
Prediction markets have priced a 73.5% chance that President Trump will order such a review by May 31, a sharp increase from prior levels.
Without a confirmed order, the question remains whether the White House will issue additional directives before the end of the month.
