The United States launched its eighth consecutive night of airstrikes on Iranian military positions on July 19, targeting coastal surveillance, air defense, and missile storage sites near the Strait of Hormuz, including Qeshm Island and the city of Sirik. The operation was the latest phase of the escalating conflict between Washington and Tehran.
The US strikes were retaliation for a July 17 Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan that killed two US service members and left one missing. Iran responded on July 19 by attacking an ammunition depot and a Patriot radar at the Al-Adiri and Ali Al Salem bases in Kuwait, a fuel pier in Kuwait, and an air base in Bahrain.
The escalation has dismantled the June 2026 Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which had established a temporary ceasefire framework. President Donald Trump declared the agreement void on July 8, and Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister stated on July 18 that the US has “suspended all its commitments.”
Iran reported at least 50 people killed and more than 500 injured from US strikes during July. A strike on a desalination plant in Jask left approximately 10,000 people without water, according to Iranian authorities.
The next focus is on whether any direct military exchange occurs between Israel and Iran before July 20. The broader ceasefire framework is widely considered defunct, but no official confirmation of a direct Israel-Iran strike has been reported as of July 19.
