The United States and Iran are nearing a framework deal to end hostilities but have not yet signed a permanent peace agreement, according to a May 24 report by Al Jazeera. The proposed memorandum of understanding includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and establishing 30-60 day negotiation windows on remaining issues.
Iran has not committed to any actions on its nuclear program as part of the current proposal, Iran's Tasnim news agency reported, per Al Jazeera. The lack of progress on nuclear terms has been a sticking point.
No permanent peace deal has been signed as of May 24, the report noted. The negotiations continue, with both sides describing a largely negotiated framework but acknowledging disagreements on details.
The coming days will determine whether the framework can be finalized into a binding agreement before existing ceasefire conditions expire or escalate.
