Ethiopia's Prosperity Party secured 438 seats out of 501 contested in the House of Peoples' Representatives during the June 1 general election, according to final results from the National Election Board of Ethiopia. The outcome gives Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed a commanding parliamentary majority as he prepares for a second five-year term.
More than 50 million registered voters participated, with turnout reported at 94%, though voting was suspended in parts of Oromia and Amhara regions due to insecurity, and the entire Tigray region was excluded from the ballot. The new parliament is expected to convene in October to swear in Abiy, according to the Associated Press and BBC.
Adanech Abiebie has served as the 32nd Mayor of Addis Ababa since September 2021, making her the first woman to hold that office since the post was created in 1910. She is a member of the Prosperity Party and previously held senior appointed roles under Abiy, including Minister of Revenue and Federal Attorney General. Abiebie has not announced a candidacy for prime minister or been publicly positioned as a successor.
Abiy's victory, combined with the party's majority and the scheduled October swearing-in, keeps the current leadership structure intact until at least the next general election in 2031, barring any unexpected vacancy. The October parliamentary session will be the next major political milestone.
