Apple heads into its September 9 product event with a challenge bigger than its usual annual phone refresh: persuade customers that it can turn a long-rumored foldable iPhone into a polished mass-market device. The company has confirmed a 10 a.m. Pacific presentation, and the showcase will be the first major hardware event under chief executive John Ternus. Apple has not confirmed the lineup, so the most consequential details remain expectations rather than facts until executives take the stage. The timing also gives Ternus an early chance to set the tone for a leadership era that will be judged on whether Apple can open new product categories, not merely improve familiar ones.
The foldable model, widely described in reporting as the iPhone Ultra, is expected to be the centerpiece. Tom's Guide says the device could use a book-style design with a roughly 7.8-inch interior display and a 5.5-inch cover screen, while the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are also expected to appear. Reports point to a new A20 Pro chip, slimmer display cutouts and camera upgrades for the Pro line. Other possible announcements include refreshed Apple Watches, AirPods and a home-control product. Those specifications, product names and release plans are still unverified by Apple, and the company could narrow or reorder the presentation. The central engineering questions will be durability, battery life and whether the hinge and interior display feel finished enough for daily use.
The event matters because a foldable would move Apple into a category rivals have spent years refining, while asking its customers to accept a higher price and a less familiar shape. The market is treating an eventual 2026 release as likely but is much less certain about immediate availability. A Polymarket contract tied to a September 30 public release rose 35 percentage points over the past day to about 73%, while a contract requiring availability by September 9 remained near 2%. That gap reflects a practical distinction: an unveiling on stage would not satisfy contracts that require the phone to be available for public purchase.
Wednesday's presentation should answer the first set of questions: whether Apple actually unveils a foldable, how it positions the device alongside the Pro line and when customers can order it. The next test will come after the applause, when preorder dates, shipping schedules and pricing reveal whether the Ultra is meant to be a showcase product or a meaningful new branch of the iPhone business. Availability will matter as much as spectacle. A device announced for later in the year would let Apple claim the category while acknowledging manufacturing constraints; a near-term ship date would signal much greater confidence in supply and quality. Until Apple publishes those details, reported specifications and release windows should be read as informed expectations, not commitments.
