The Norwegian Nobel Committee registered 287 candidates for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, comprising 208 individuals and 79 organisations, the committee announced on 30 April 2026. The winner will be revealed on Friday, 9 October 2026, at 11:00 CEST at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo, with the award ceremony scheduled for 10 December 2026.
Greta Thunberg, the Swedish climate activist, has been reportedly nominated by Norwegian parliamentarian Frøya Sjursæther for what the nominator described as her principled and non-violent efforts for peace, justice and international solidarity, especially regarding Gaza, climate, and indigenous peoples. Thunberg has been a perennial nominee since 2019 but has never been selected.
The committee's secretary, Kristian Berg Harpviken, said on 30 April that while the 287 total is lower than the record 376 nominations in 2016, the figure remains consistently high. He noted that there is no lack of candidates whose principled commitment and innovative action points toward a brighter future.
Nominations closed on 31 January 2026, with committee members able to add further names at their first meeting on 26 February. The committee's deliberations are strictly confidential, and the identities of nominees are sealed for 50 years under Nobel statutes. The 2026 prize carries a reward of 9.0 million Swedish kronor.
The committee will announce its decision on 9 October. The award ceremony is set for 10 December in Oslo.
