Prediction markets now price a 53.85% probability that gold (XAUUSD) will hit $4,700 in August, a sharp rise from lower levels earlier this month as bullion's extraordinary rally continues. Spot gold touched $4,499.20 on Aug. 19, its highest since June 4, while U.S. futures settled at $4,545.30 the same day, according to Reuters data. The probability more than doubled in the past week as traders priced in a string of bullish signals, including lower Treasury yields and geopolitical developments that have driven gold up roughly $400 or 10% since Aug. 1.
The key question for this market is whether spot gold or futures can breach $4,700 before the Aug. 31 settlement deadline. On Aug. 20, spot gold was around $4,516.19 after touching an intraday low near $4,450.08, while U.S. gold futures settled at $4,571.40 — still roughly $129 below the target in futures terms and nearly $184 below in spot terms. A Reuters video item on Aug. 20 noted that some analysts still expect gold to surpass $5,000 an ounce in 2027, suggesting that bullish forecasts remain in play even if the August target appears ambitious from current levels.
Achieving $4,700 in the remaining days of August would require a fresh macro catalyst, such as a sharp drop in the U.S. dollar, a further decline in real yields, or renewed geopolitical stress. Gold has already posted its strongest month in decades, driven by central bank buying and hopes of progress on opening the Strait of Hormuz, which boosted the metal earlier in August. The market's rapid ascent from $4,264.93 on Aug. 5 to current levels near $4,500 demonstrates the momentum, but the final leg higher may prove the steepest.
If gold fails to reach $4,700 by Aug. 31, the market will resolve negatively, but the broader outlook for bullion remains strong. Central banks have spearheaded a renewed gold rush, and the macro environment — including weak U.S. jobs data that pushed gold to a seven-week high on Aug. 7 — continues to support prices. Traders should watch for any policy signals from the Federal Reserve or sudden shifts in Iran-related tensions that could provide the final push.
