Brazil's 2026 presidential election is moving from pre-campaign positioning into an open contest. The Associated Press reported that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the two leading contenders, launched their campaigns in their political strongholds on Aug. 16 ahead of an expected tight October vote.
