The first round of high-level US-Iran talks concluded June 22 in Switzerland, producing a mechanism to keep the Strait of Hormuz open but no agreement on Iranian transit fees, according to the Associated Press.
Vice President JD Vance said the talks laid a "good foundation for a successful final deal." The memorandum of understanding includes a 60-day negotiation roadmap and a $300 billion reconstruction fund, but transit fees were not addressed, The National and Time reported.
President Donald Trump threatened further military action on June 21-22, stating he would "hit Iran very hard again" and that delegates "won't even make it back to your f***ing country" if the Strait was closed, according to Euronews and Time.
Negotiations are set to continue under the 60-day roadmap, with the next round expected in the coming weeks. The absence of any public discussion of transit fees makes an agreement by June 30 unlikely.
